Self Disclosed: The Diaspora of Your Information
Self-Disclosed is a software project providing the tools and interface to record your data transactions.
A data transaction is when you provide “personal” data to an online entity in return for access to information or services. Examples of “personal” data include your email address, mobile phone number, your mother’s maiden name, credit card number, etc. Self-Disclosed allows you to find trends in your data spending including what data you freely give, and what data you often protect.
The goal of the project is three-fold:
- It provides tools, similar to a check register, to track the spending of data
- It provides tools to look for trends in data spending and data transactions
- It provides an opportunity to reflect on the role of data in formulating identity
Self-Disclosed provides you with the following:
- A user account protected by an encrypted password
- Privacy, as the project does not collect ANY personally identifying information
- A database to store your data spending information
- An automated tool, formWatcher (a Firefox Add-On), to prompt you to record your data spending as it happens. (Note: this function can be “turned off”)
- A manual tool, to add additional data spending information, when you want to in addition to or instead of using the automated tool.
- A set of visualization tools including statistical views, chart-based views and an interactive visual view to discover trends in your data spending habits.
- References to other projects or resources relevant to your personal data explorations. (Coming Soon)
